Why am I studying again, again?

The combined pressure of work and graduate studies has finally taken its toll on me. That "oh I'm finally growing up" feeling of pride at being a graduate student who can actually (gasp!) get a master's degree at a young age has long since left me. I'm lucky if I sometimes wake up with a fleeting determination to actually cross out an impressive number of tasks on my perpetually growing to-do list, but I usually come crashing down hard after I lose my caffeine kick right before lunch. Now, I yearn for days when I can just focus on one thing without juggling requirements that seem to get more demanding as each week progresses. I miss my carefree days as a working girl solely focused on impressing my boss and maintaining my rigid work-life balanced lifestyle. These days, I'm lucky if I get to spend my free time reading a book or chilling out. Studying post-graduate is a thankless job, I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth the pain and effort.

Lucky for me, Jake happened to drop by La Salle for a quick visit earlier on his way home from Makati. It was my last happy feeling before graduate-school reality came around to remind me that, no, it's a Friday and I stupidly signed up for Friday night classes thinking I can pull it off and give up my social life.

Screw this. It's only midterms week and I'm barely surviving the pressure. Thank God for boyfriends.

Me and the boy

It's one of those days when I'm feeling particularly mushy about the boyfriend. I love him to bits and pieces. I really do <3

Post-Paranormal Activity 3

So the girls and I just watched Paranormal Activity 3 and managed to start and end the movie while clutching each other and holding our hands over our eyes. It always amazes me how the old banging things and dragging people around trick never gets old. As an avid fan of the series, I must say this takes the cake. Kudos to the people behind it who seamlessly connected all three films. Brilliant. They have taken the shock level to new heights this time around.

Oh, and thanks for scaring me witless. I'm officially unable to walk around our house by myself once again.

Sunset in the city

When I went jogging before my 6pm class a couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to capture this amazing view of the sun setting over downtown Manila  from the seventh floor of the sports complex:

I love sunsets and I feel blessed being able to witness something inspiring from an otherwise usually bleak landscape of smog and shanty roofs. It feels good knowing I don't need to go to the beach just to see these colors.

P.S. I shot this using my iPhone 4. Yeah, it's THAT amazing.

Daydreaming of pancakes and bacons

Because I only had a Milo for brekky this morning, I shall satisfy myself by browsing this 50 of the World's Best Breakfasts site Jake sent last week. I'm currently trying to fool myself that staring at these English and American breakfast spreads will satisfy my hunger minus the calories.

I feel a whole lot better now.

Turning 23 with the boyfriend

Turned twenty three last week and celebrated with the boy, my family, and the girls. I am blessed to be surrounded by these people. I'll blog about my three-part (yeah, I tend to celebrate my birthdays for a whole week or so) celebration, first up is lunch with the boyfie on the day itself.

First, he surprised me with my favorite yellow rose. Sweet! It's been ages since he got me a flower.

And this is why. Haha.

Then, we went off to Little Tokyo for some authentic Japanese. I originally planned to eat yakiniku at Urameshiya but found out they only open at 5pm so we ended up at Seryna, which was an even better choice. Because it's my birthday, the gods though they'd cut me some slack and had a table ready for us. We were lucky to be seated during lunch hour without reservations at the jam-packed Seryna. Winner!

As always when at a Japanese restaurant, we over-ordered. Seryna's one of the best authentic places here in Manila, apart from Kikufuji!

We went inside Little Tokyo to check out the place. Up next on our Japanese food trip: sushis at Kikufuji then off to Urameshiya!

wearing Topshop scalloped top and eyelet shorts, Aldo gladiators, H&M bag, Promod necklace

Yeah, I have a thing for statues.

After a year of nagging Jake, we finally had our Chocolate Fire date! He's the sweetest, yes? Haha.

They have the BEST cheesecake we've tasted so far, well maybe not the best 'cause I'm sure Jake would beg to differ. But definitely one of the best we've had, and we have tasted  A LOT. It almost made me regret getting the Fire & Ice sundae and not another slice instead. I'm thinking of buying a whole cake just to make myself happy.

That day was pretty awesome, and not just because Jake treated me to shopping sprees at Topshop and Zara and behaved like a good boyfriend. Haha. I love birthdays.

Nomnomnoming my way around El Nido

El Nido's a small, charming town with plenty of hole-in-the-wall and family-run restaurants scattered around the beach and on the narrow Calle Hama road. I always looked forward to walking up and down the beach or the main road with a breathtaking view of the taraw cliffs embracing the town while looking for a place to eat. Here are our must-try places at El Nido:

Squidos
On our first day we ate at Squidos, arguably the most popular restaurant on the island located on Calle Hama. I've read about it from several online reviews, particularly for its seafood dishes. I highly recommend the seafood pizza and capricciosa pizza. We ate here twice and I must say, they serve one of the best-tasting piƱacoladas! The French owner, Jean-Marc Lafarge, was always there to mingle with his mostly European patrons. We were the only Pinoys there and I kept wishing I knew how to speak Spanish and French since we were surrounded by them Europeans.

Lonesome Carabao Lounge
Unlike Boracay, El Nido is generally a sleepy town where nightlife exists until only midnight at the latest. We went out hankering for a meal at around 9pm and had a hard time looking for a place to eat since most establishments were already closed for the night. While walking along Calle Hama, we spied this warm-looking place with some Europeans again and decided to check it out and I was glad we did 'cause they served some mean  beef steak and sizzling sisig! Also, I spotted a Nate Archibald lookalike at the bar, plus ten points in my book!

Pukka Bar
I'm a self-confessed coffee addict and I will always, ALWAYS crave for Pukka Bar's pressed coffee! There's something about their coffee beans that I can't find anywhere else. We ate here for breakfast twice and also dined and had drinks here for late-night cocktails and beers. They have a charming beach-front terrace where you can eat with an awesome view of El Nido's Bacuit bay and Cadlao island. I think they bake their own bread since it has the soft, home-made quality. I also recommend their yummy filling omelets and crepes. However, my most favorite part about this place was the bartender who made the most perfect caipirinhas and rhum Cokes--just the right mix of alcohol to get me happily tipsy. I will always remember the breezy night we spent there drinking by the beach.

El Nido Art Cafe
Art Cafe is El Nido's only travel and souvenir shop where you can also dine on the second floor with an awesome view of the beach and the limestone mountains. We ate breakfast here on our last day and the view alone made me consider staying longer. Imagine eating omelets with homemade bread and coffee with a view of the calm water and the sun streaming through the mountains--too breathtaking. I also loved the fact that they have a mini-library and how they strategically placed wide windows even at the back so you can see the limestone cliffs wherever you're sitting.

It's located at the far end of El Nido town where the street sort of converges in a narrow dead-end before you go around the bend to the beach. There were also homey restaurants in this area and your dead-end view is the looming mountain that borders the town.

Skyline Grill and Restaurant
We were famished after our trip to the mini-Boracay secret island so when our tricyle driver suggested we try Skyline, we did not hesitate. It looks like your typical no-frills carinderia but they serve some awesome dinuguan for a turo-turo price. They also have the best view of the limestone cliffs from their rooftop. I'm too envious to think about these people waking up to that view every morning. It's not located in the main Calle Hama road and you have to turn left at some side street and follow the route going to the church. I still can't get over the beauty of the taraw cliffs embracing the whole town.

When we head back to El Nido (the sooner, the better!), I want to try some of the places we saw that looked interesting: Sea Slugs, The Alternative, La Salangane, Habibi Shisha Cafe & Restaurant, and Bacuit Grill & Bar. I can't wait to set foot on the island again. :-)

Her precious fairy vagina

Eric and Pam are the only reason why I watch True Blood. Between Pam's bitching and crassing around and Eric's, well, just being Eric-fucking-Northman, I live for their sweet moments and scenes where Pam shows her soft side around Eric. That, and Pam's treasured quotes, with my latest favorite from Season 4 (yeah I just caught up with the season with an all-nighter marathon last night):

You said it, girlfriend.

Because I'm turning a year older

Every once in a while, I feel justified in embracing my shallowness when the right opportunity presents itself. During holidays, stressful work days, and of course, my birthday, I am entitled to muse all day about the things that I want. And so, since it's only two days until my birthday, I've already spent a considerable amount of time flitting around the shops to check out the clothes I want to get my hands on, and browsing online for further "research".

So far, Topshop looks promising and ditto for H&M. Yes, I know there's no H&M here but my cousin's off to Singapore next week and my officemate has an upcoming Hong Kong trip so I'm already preparing my carefully laid-out, full-color shopping guide for them.

So far, so good! And to make everything just perfect, Forever 21's having a sale this weekend and Zara still has my coveting-for-months pale jeans on stock when I last checked! I'm kinda looking forward to turning twenty three now :)

Becky Bloomwood-ing this weekend!

Jake and I have this tradition for birthday gifts: I get him his limited edition Nike kicks and he treats me to a shopping spree to my heart's content. And guess what? Forever 21 just announced they're having a sale this weekend. The boyfriend's already panicking and I'm already planning my shopping strategy.

To quote Becky Bloomwood:

No truer words were ever spoken.

Steve and Mona

I was never a die-hard Steve Jobs fan. I admired him for his visionary speeches but unlike Jake, who's been a loyal Apple user ever since the iPod, iPhone, and MacBook Pro came out, I can only claim my dependence on Apple products on the iPod Nano I share with my sister and my beloved iPhone 4. But when news of his death prompted pretty much everyone to chronicle his fiercely private personal life, I came across some amazing trivia that I still can't get over with: Steve Jobs is Mona Simpson's biological brother! Mona who? Anywhere But Here, fools! I can't count the number of time I've read this book, and I think it's inspiring that they were close despite being separated at birth when Jobs was put up for adoption.

Rest in peace and happiness, Mr. Jobs. Thank you for changing the world.

Monday morning blues

It's one of those days when I just want to be carefree, bum around and work on my tan. Maybe nag the boyfriend to take me out for sweets.

Oh, the things I would rather be doing on a Monday.

Hello, October

It's officially my birthday month! I'm filled with bittersweet excitement, knowing I can no longer act like a bratty child at 23. Gone are the days when I can blame it all on being, somewhat technically, a "teenager "at 21 and 22. I'm nowhere near a financially and emotionally stable state of being most people expect they'll be at twenty three, I can barely manage to keep it together when immaturity calls. So yes, I think I'll start blazing my way to independence when I turn a year older in a week. Or not.

Here's to semi-adulthood. Wish me luck!
